Early careers

Torridge District Council are committed to inspiring the next generation of talent, which is why we place great importance on working with our local schools, colleges and universities, to provide students with real workplace opportunities to grow, develop and inspire.

We are always looking to the future to ensure that we are helping to support the next generation of employees to gain the skills and experience that they need to succeed in the workplace. We are working to develop career pathways within our teams and utilising a range of opportunities to attract and retain the best talent. We do this through:

Work experience

Here at Torridge, we support and facilitate work experience placements from schools, colleges and universities. We offer a work experience programme that enables students to work across a variety of departments during their placement with us, learning about many of the different services that the Council provide to the residents of Torridge.

To apply for a placement here with us at Torridge, we ask students to email their CV and a small supporting statement, giving us information about themselves and what particular areas of work they are interested in to hr@torridge.gov.uk. If we are able to facilitate their placement, students are invited to our Riverbank House office for an informal interview, giving them invaluable interview experience and skills for future education/employment.

Apprenticeships

Do you want to earn as you learn? As well as a competitive salary our apprenticeships offer you the chance to achieve a fully sponsored, recognised qualification.

As part of our commitment to developing individuals through career paths, we utilise apprentice programmes to train new and existing employees, providing them with qualifications and hands on experience in their chosen career. We’ve had apprentices in a number of departments from Planning, Communications, Customer Service and our Mechanical Workshop and, whilst we can’t guarantee permanent employment on completion of the apprenticeship, the majority of our apprentices have gone on to secure employment with us once they have finished their course.

We’re frequently asked what age you have to be, but there is no age limit! So whether you’re finishing school or college, or looking for a change in career, apprenticeship opportunities are open to everyone.

Many of our apprentices have taken part in National awards such as the Local Government Apprentice of the Year 2022.

T-Levels

T-Levels provide students with hands on work experience whilst undertaking a qualification. We are currently offering two T-level placements to Petroc college students. These will be in our Economic Development and our Comms Teams. We hope that by providing these students with practical experience for their T-level qualification, they will gain valuable experience of the world of work and have the opportunity to contribute to many projects here at TDC. We can’t wait to see how our T-Level students get on in their roles and are looking to provide further opportunities going forward.

Graduate Opportunities

We’ve had many graduates join us straight from university and start their career with us. We offer a supportive and inclusive environment where you’ll be able to put the skills you have learnt at university into practice. You’ll receive plenty of training and development to ensure that you have everything you need to perform at your best and succeed in your role.

We are currently participating in the LGA National Graduate Development Programme, offering a two year placement to a recent graduate, providing them with experience working across a variety of departments and projects.

Interested in any of these opportunities and would like to know more? Please email hr@torridge.gov.uk.

Summer Placement Students

Over the past two years we have recruited students who on are their summer break to temporary posts assisting teams to complete short term pieces of work. This offers students a great opportunity to gain some real work experience that they can include on their CV’s or College/University applications. These posts are always advertised on our Torridge Jobs and Careers Facebook page, so keep an eye out should this be of interest to you.
